    Former President Shehu Shagari has described late Dr. Alex Ekwueme, as a vp he trusted whereas their service to the nation lasted.

    Shagari additionally stated that due to the deep belief he had for Ekweme it was tough for mischief makers to drive a wedge between them.

    The Second Republic president of Nigeria stated this in a tribute made obtainable to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Enugu.

    The deceased was an in depth ally of Shagari and first democratically elected vp of the nation between 1979 and 1983, below the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).

    “Dr. Ekwueme was a deputy I trusted. We understood one another effectively and it was not possible for mischief makers to drive a wedge between us.

    “He was a loyal lieutenant and because of his excellent contributions to the success of our administration during our first tenure, I had no hesitation to nominate him to run with me again for second term,” he stated.

    Shagari recalled how their administration was infamously terminated via a army coup in December 1983.

    The former president stated that the deceased was a really brave man, who suffered a number of months of imprisonment and home arrest with numerous politicians who served within the Second Republic.

    Shagari within the tribute, described the late Ekwueme, as a selfless chief and a contented man not given to crass corruption and primitive acquisition of wealth.

    “That was why despite the ordeals he went via within the palms of the army and the marketing campaign of calumny towards his particular person, his character remained impeccable and unimpeachable.

    “He has served Nigeria diligently. He has executed his bit. In life he was a fantastic man; a patriot; a statesman. Even in dying his many achievements and greatness can’t be diminished.

    “It is taken into account socially inappropriate to talk sick of the useless. So usually those that pay tribute to the useless bathe on them undeserved reward. I stand to not give undeserved eulogy to this hero.

    “Whatever I say here today, I have said of him in his life time,” the previous president stated.

    “Dr. Alex Ekwueme has completed his personal race and has gone to relaxation.

    “It is left for those of us still alive to emulate the virtues he exemplified especially serving humanity with the fear of God,” Shagari stated.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) studies that the previous vp died on Nov. 19, 2017 in a London hospital and can be interred on Feb. 2 in his residence city, Oko in Anambra.
